What H.E.L.P.™ for Kids Does

H.E.L.P.™ for Kids teaches students simple, predictable safety actions they can use during emergencies. The model gives children clear, developmentally appropriate steps that reduce fear, strengthen confidence, and help them stay emotionally grounded. As students grow, the same four steps become stronger, more intentional, and more situationally aware — always with adults guiding the tactical decisions.

A Simple, Predictable Model Students Can Remember

H.E.L.P.™ gives students four clear, developmentally aligned safety actions they can use during emergencies. The acronym stays the same from early childhood through adolescence, but the way students use each step becomes stronger, more intentional, and as they grow.

H — Hide
Students learn how to move to a safe, quiet place with their teacher or trusted adult. Younger students focus on staying with the group, while older students learn to hide with more awareness and steadiness.

E — Evacuate
Students practice leaving the area with their class when an adult says it’s safe to do so. As students mature, they apply this step with greater confidence, awareness of surroundings, and calm movement.

L — Listen
Students learn to listen carefully to their teacher or trusted adult during emergencies. Older students develop stronger listening skills, including attending to announcements, environmental cues, and adult direction under stress.

P — Protect Yourself
Students learn simple, developmentally appropriate actions to stay safe — such as staying low, staying quiet, or following protective instructions. As they grow, students apply this step with more intentionality and emotional steadiness.

A Model That Strengthens as Students Mature

H.E.L.P.™ is intentionally designed to grow with students from early childhood through middle school. The four steps stay the same, but the way students use them becomes stronger and more confident as they develop.

Pre‑K to Grade 2 — Simple, Predictable, Adult‑Led
Students follow clear, concrete directions from their teacher. The focus is on staying together, staying calm, and using simple actions they can remember under stress.

Grades 3–5 — More Awareness, Still Adult‑Centered
Students begin to understand why they are using each step. They develop more awareness of their surroundings and support peers by staying calm and predictable.

Grades 6–8 — Stronger, More Intentional, Still Trauma‑Informed
Older students apply H.E.L.P.™ with greater situational awareness, emotional steadiness, and confidence. They understand context, follow adult direction with clarity, and use the steps more intentionally — while adults continue making all tactical decisions.

Why Predictable Safety Actions Matter for Kids

Students feel safer when they know what to do, who to go to, and how to express what they’re feeling. Developmentally aligned safety actions reduce fear, strengthen confidence, and help students stay emotionally grounded during moments of uncertainty. H.E.L.P.™ for Kids gives schools a predictable, trauma‑informed way to teach safety without creating fear or overwhelm.

Aligned with the TIRRA+™ Framework

H.E.L.P.™ for Kids is the student‑facing component of the TIRRA+™ Framework. It gives children the simple, predictable actions they need while adults use the TIRRA+™ routines and Powered Response™ tools to create emotionally safe environments. Together, these components build a consistent, trauma‑informed safety ecosystem.
