Classroom Safety Setup Packet
A Trauma-Informed Resource for Educators
The Classroom Safety Setup Packet is a trauma‑informed, educator‑ready guide designed to help K–12 teachers create calm, predictable, and safer learning environments. It contains five standalone sections, each grounded in the TIRRA+™ Framework and intentionally written to avoid fear‑based language. The packet can be used for PD, staff orientations, or classroom setup reviews.
1. Understanding the Hard Corner
Explains what a hard corner is — “the area inside a classroom that is not visible from the door or any exterior window” — and why it serves as a predictable rally point during emergencies. Includes a simple identification test and a readiness checklist.
2. Intentional Furniture Placement
Shows how furniture arrangement becomes a Tier 1 safety strategy that supports both instruction and emergency readiness. Key principles include clear pathways, sightlines, teaching position, heavy‑furniture placement, and mobile seating.
3. Lines of Safety
Defines the three invisible safety lines in every classroom:
-
Line of Sight from Entry
-
Line of Movement to the Hard Corner
-
Line of Egress
Each line includes practical guidance and a self‑assessment table.
4. Predictable Entry & Exit Routines
Shows how daily routines reduce chaos, strengthen relationships, and anchor safety. Covers greeting students, securing the door, predictable first tasks, orderly exits, and teacher‑led dismissal.
5. Quick‑Start Checklist
A one‑page, actionable checklist synthesizing all previous sections. Covers room layout, lines of safety, routines, and communication essentials.
