Today, I want to discuss whether the role of AI in enhancing school safety makes schools safer.


These advanced technologies have the potential to improve school safety. Tools like video cameras and facial recognition help identify and respond to possible dangers faster than traditional methods. For example, they can spot unusual behavior, detect unauthorized individuals on campus, and alert staff in medical emergencies, giving them extra time to respond.


There are real-life examples that show how helpful these systems can be. At Prescott High School in Prescott, Arizona, an AI system noticed a student having an asthma attack, allowing for quick help. Similarly, in the City of Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada, the use of AI security systems cut down emergency response times from 15 minutes to just four, demonstrating how quickly action can be taken when needed.


However, we must continue to be aware of some challenges with these systems. Privacy is a big concern; constant surveillance can feel invasive. Additionally, there are problems with bias, especially in facial recognition technology, which can lead to mistakes and unfair treatment.


In summary, while AI security systems could help improve school safety, we must carefully consider the potential downsides, like privacy issues, fairness, and costs. To use these systems effectively, planning well, monitoring their use, and thinking ethically are important. But above all, engaging with everyone involved—students, parents, and staff—is vital. Their insights and perspectives are invaluable for making informed decisions about school safety.
