As someone deeply committed to the well-being of children and school communities, I created H.E.L.P.™ (Hide, Evacuate, Listen, Protect Yourself) to address an urgent need for a safety framework tailored for our younger learners – pre-K to 8th grade. Schools face growing challenges, and I saw a gap for a system that empowers even the youngest students with clear, age-appropriate steps to protect themselves in emergencies without instilling fear.
I wanted to create something simple, universal, and adaptable that saves lives while fostering confidence and preparedness in students, educators, and parents. H.E.L.P.™ is grounded in the belief that safety should be accessible to all, regardless of age or background, and adaptable to various emergencies.
Through H.E.L.P.™, I’ve aimed to balance proactive preparedness with reactive response, ensuring students learn practical skills they can apply in school and beyond. The steps – Hide, Evacuate, Listen, Protect Yourself – are designed to be clear and memorable, providing students with the tools to act decisively in any emergency.
This program was created for every teacher who seeks to protect their classroom, every parent who wants to ensure their child’s safety at school, and every student who deserves to learn in an environment that prioritizes care and preparedness. H.E.L.P.™ is more than a framework – it’s a promise to safeguard the most vulnerable members of our communities while instilling the confidence to navigate uncertain situations with clarity and courage.
Children at these ages are full of potential and curiosity but rely on adults to guide them through uncertain situations. My goal with H.E.L.P.™: Empowering Every Pre-K to 8th Grader was to create a program that not only teaches vital safety skills but also fosters trust and builds confidence at every developmental level:
• For the youngest learners, H.E.L.P.™ offers gentle, engaging lessons through storytelling, visuals, and safe and approachable activities.
• For elementary-aged students, it provides relatable scenarios and hands-on exercises to deepen their understanding of safety measures.
• For middle schoolers, H.E.L.P.™ introduces more complex decision-making and leadership opportunities, empowering them to take the initiative and help others.
H.E.L.P.™ sets itself apart from other programs like ALICE by emphasizing simplicity, proactive safety, and broader applicability. While ALICE excels in preparing older students for active shooter scenarios, H.E.L.P.™ provides a foundational, inclusive approach suitable for younger students and diverse emergencies. The two frameworks can work in tandem, with H.E.L.P.™ laying the groundwork for students to transition into more advanced safety measures in high school.
For brands and organizations: H.E.L.P.™ is an opportunity to champion early safety education through innovative resources, training, and community outreach. Its adaptable nature ensures every child can learn essential safety skills, while its focus on age-appropriate training promotes a culture of preparedness and confidence among students, families, and educators. By supporting H.E.L.P.™, your brand can lead a life-saving initiative, contributing to a safer, more secure future for school communities.
